Individuals held in prisons and correctional facilities have been charged with a crime or convicted of a crime. People accused of a crime are detained pending trial or release. Those formally accused of a crime remain in jail or prison until they have served their sentence.

Victims can sign up to receive notifications of prisoner status changes via phone, email, and text.

To search, visit the website and select the appropriate state from the drop-down menu. After making a selection, you will be directed to the VINE home page for the corresponding federal state. You can search a statewide inmate database or drill down to county databases where available. You can find a specific culprit, edit registry details or access additional features.

Click on the Finder an Offender icon to find an offender. On the next page, enter the detainee's last name and first name. Alternatively, you can enter the prisoner's identification number, if you have one. Also, click on the Advanced Search link to add more search parameters. For example, you can add institution name, date of birth and age group.

Online search forms by state

In most states, the Department of Corrections website explains how to search for incarcerated individuals. However, not all states offer online access to prisoner records. I'm compiling a list of links to states that offer online search forms and will post the links here soon.

Please note that the terminology used for search forms and queries may vary from state to state. For example, you will see prisoner search, prisoner search, perpetrator search, and prisoner search. Additionally, other states use terms such as "residents" and "incarcerated persons".

How to Find an Inmate in a Federal Prison

To find someone in a federal prison, use the federal prisoner locator. This tool allows you to search a database of federal prisoners who have been incarcerated since 1982. Once you have located the person, you can use the federal prison locator to find out more about the specific facility they are in. This search provides information about the type of prison and the level of security - for example, minimum security, maximum security, etc.

It is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with two correctional officer training centers and 28 community correctional offices. However, these numbers change each year due to prison openings and closures. So check the official website for the latest numbers.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is responsible for the custody and care of more than 200,000 federal offenders in the national prison system. Approximately 85 percent of these federal prisoners are physically in correctional facilities or detention facilities run by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The rest of the prisoners are restricted by agreements with state and municipal governments. Also through contracts with private community correctional facilities, detention centers, prisons and youth centers.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is also responsible for conducting all court-ordered federal executions (excluding those conducted under military law) in the United States and maintains the national lethal injection facility in Terre Haute, Indiana.
