what to expect

Your ferry to Rottnest Island departs from Perth or Fremantle, depending on the option chosen when booking. If you're flying from Perth, travel through the city on the Swan River to reach Fremantle, from where it's a 25-minute journey across the ocean to 'Rotto', as it's known locally.

Once you arrive, you are free to explore the island with its 63 beaches and 20 bays at your leisure. There are plenty of places to get wet by swimming, snorkeling, surfing or just relaxing on the sand and watching the yachts go by on the water. The most popular activity for visitors is renting a bike on the island for a leisurely ride along the scenic roads where cars are not allowed. If you are interested in history, visit attractions such as Lomas Cottage, Rottnest Island Museum, the Pilot Boathouse or the Salt Store and Exhibition Centre. And don't forget to keep an eye out for wildlife, especially the island's native quokkas. (All entrance fees, activities, rentals, food and beverages are at your own expense.)

At the end of your full day on the island, return to Fremantle or Perth via the return ferry.

Tips for travelers

Well worth the day trip - the tour bus is a great way to see the island.

The ferry is comfortable even when there is some swell outside the harbour.

Traveling to Perth in a 2 hour drive, I went to the Rotnest Express office meeting point and reception point as per the instructions in our email to be told that our ferry was from Fremantle about 30km away and that we were at the wrong place Place were and would ' No time for booked ferry. Luckily the young lady booked us in on the 10am ferry from Fremantle, which we did with minutes to spare. Viator ruined our day.

Friendly staff and good service, it was a short trip to and from Rottnest Island taking only 30 minutes each way. The price was cheaper than the competitors. Highly recommended.

Fantastic experience, we settled on a beautiful beach and really enjoyed the day. worth a trip

I would absolutely recommend it

Serena_M,

Very good experience! I recommend going around the island by bus as the bike route is a bit long. The bus is hop on hop off style so you can enjoy different beaches and see the whole island. It was quite windy and hot in January so the bus was the safe option.

Day trip to Rottnest

We had absolute fun biking all day just to visit the island. I recommend going when the holidays aren't there so there are fewer people. Service was quick so no complaints. Quokas are so cute too

It's something you must do when visiting Perth. It was a good visit, very busy crowds and queues everywhere. but a very nice one

loss of money

Teresa_C,

Standing in line, not being able to get bikes or being able to get on and off the bus, impersonal service doesn't matter. I will no longer recommend any tourist or give a coupon. I was ashamed that I had spent so much money on my family and they had such a disappointing experience.

Beautiful day.

gillian_t,

Beautiful island, so easy to get on and off the buses. Buses were plentiful, especially as it was Christmas and the island was very busy. The boats that crossed the island were very well organized.

Great family day.

The whole day was amazing but coming home and sitting upstairs and soaking wet was so much fun. We enjoyed the bus tour except I think the guide could have commented on the stops. This was disappointing as we missed stops. The ferry staff all over the island were absolutely lovely. 🥰

Something to see! ...just avoid the high season

The ferry ride was good, very busy even though it was high season...Rottnest Island is a must see for anyone traveling to WA.

good but bad

Taij_d,

December 2022

Rottnest is a large island so we are the travel staff on the boats but sailing at the wrong time can result in poor service on the island making you feel unwanted. There is definitely more demand than the transportation provided and disregard for the young teens mostly ruins the experience. I loved hearing 3 people throwing up in public restrooms, women going into men's restrooms because they couldn't wait in line. Pretty embarrassing.
