The Best Used Cars Under $5,000 for 2021 (2023)

The last time anew carSold for less than $5,000 in 1990 and the vehicle was the infamous Yugo. In 2021, 5,000 will not buy much of anything older than 8 years. While older, out-of-warranty cars are inherently riskier purchases, careful research can still yield reliable, quality, and even fun drives that list for less than $5,000.

Using a combination of owner feedback, reliability ratings, average transaction prices, and the experience of Forbes Wheels staff, we've compiled a list of 20 great candidates for buyers on a budget. To meet our criteria, we looked at cars newer than the 1996 model year that were also available for less than $5,000. We prioritize models with good reliability values and low running costs.

For older vehicles, buying from an individual can sometimes generate more value than buying from a dealer. It's still possible to get good cars for under $5,000 from dealers, but the private market tends to have lower asking prices, and some sellers have detailed maintenance records to show.

In addition, since even the most historically reliable cars suffer from a lack of maintenance over time, we recommend a mechanical inspection before purchase. In theory, this is easier than ever because there are now mobile mechanic services booked via smartphone that can come directly to the vehicle.

1 2007-2012 Honda-Tuning

Why we chose it:The fit may be small, but it's a great value. It has an excellent reliability record, achieving up to 31 mpg combined. Despite its compact size, the Fit's minivan-like interior makes great use of space. It's loud and boisterous on the freeway, but fun to drive, with responsive handling and a willing engine. The first generation models (2007 and 2008) are a little cheaper than the later ones, but a little less reliable.

  • Reliable and cheap to run
  • fun to drive
  • Space and fuel savings

  • loud and small
  • Solid handling, small tires can wear out quickly
  • Missing interior.

2. Toyota Avalon 2000-2008

Why we chose it:Toyota's largest and most conservative car, the Avalon is built for a quiet, comfortable ride and excels on long road trips. It's also a steadfast champion of reliability: every generation of the Avalon deserves high marks for durability and owner satisfaction. While not necessarily exciting to drive or look at, it is a step below oneLexusIt means good interior design and materials. These years cover two generations of Avalon, although all are good choices.

  • reliable and safe
  • Good mpg for a big car
  • Comfortable, refined and quiet.

  • Repairs can be expensive
  • The newer ones hardly come under $5,000
  • Not exciting to drive or watch

3. 2004-2006 Vástago xB

Why we chose it:el funkyMiniDesigned for Tokyo rather than Tampa, the xB truck looked like no other car or crossover when it was new and remains distinctive today. The first-gen xB is smaller than the later 2008-2015 model, but tends to get better valuation and reliability ratings from owners. It still has plenty of room inside, gets good gas mileage and is easy to park. The xB isn't fast and noisy on the Autobahn, but it's agile and fun to drive.

  • Still stylish 17 years later
  • Reliable and cheap to buy
  • fun to drive

  • Hard to find units with low mileage
  • Noisy on the highway and prone to cross winds
  • Slow with automatic transmission

4. Coche Lincoln 1998-2011

Why we chose it:Beneath the Town Car's sleek exterior are the same rugged mechanical parts found in a Ford Crown Victoria police car. As a result, the Lincoln has a solid reputation for durability and longevity. Inside is a comfortable and welcoming place with plenty of amenities and room for up to six people in a pinch. The downside is that the V8-powered, rear-wheel drive city car is really huge at 215 inches long and 4,300 pounds, so fuel economy and handling aren't great.

(Video) 5 Used Cars You Should Buy

  • very durable
  • Lots of space and luxury
  • powerful and quiet

  • 15 mpg in the city
  • huge size
  • Some have seen the use of taxis and are best avoided.

5. 1997–2006 Lexus ES

Why we chose it:The high-end sister of LexusToyotaCamry, all versions of the ES, are rated very highly as used cars, with excellent reliability records and a host of JD Power awards. As you would expect from a luxury vehicle, both ES generations of these years have powerful V6 engines, comfortable interiors and calm, refined drivers. Low-mileage models can be hard to find at $5,000, but these ES years are on the lower end of their depreciation curve.

  • Impeccable reliability
  • luxurious and quiet
  • Good safety ratings

  • Hard to find low mileage cars
  • Some features can be expensive to repair and it is important to ensure timing belt maintenance has been performed.
  • anonymous style

6. 2004–2006 Vastagus xA

Why we chose it:The conventional-looking half of Toyota's original Scion range, the xA is powered by the same 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and uses many of the same mechanical parts as its boxy xB brother. The xA's better aerodynamics mean it's quieter than the xB, achieving 30mpg combined, but is slightly less spacious inside. It also gets rave reviews from owners and scores well for reliability, although its unconventional interior design may not be to everyone's liking.

  • Excellent reliability ratings
  • Cheap to buy and own
  • Good features for a cheap car.

  • seltsames Dashboard-Layout
  • small interior
  • Limited cargo space with rear passengers

7. Toyota Camry 2002-2006

Why we chose it:The Camry's legendary reliability and easygoing nature made it America's best-selling car for many years. While it's hard to go wrong with most Camrys, the fifth-generation model seems to have the strongest reliability ratings and lowest owner ratings in the sub-$5,000 range these years. Available with either a four-cylinder or a V6 engine, Camry is practical and quiet in every way. It returns 21 to 24 mpg combined and the cost of ownership is low.

  • Known reliable
  • Popular and easy to find in different versions
  • Low maintenance

  • not exciting
  • Sloppy maintenance can be a problem
  • Base motor not very strong

9. 2004–2008 Acura TSX

Why we chose it:It may take a bit of searching for a clean, low-mileage car, but the first-gen TSX is one of the most entertaining daily drivers you can buy for under $5,000. It's a nice machine with responsive handling, a high-revving 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine with up to 205 hp and an available manual gearbox. It has a solid reputation for reliability, but it's a bit small inside and the combined fuel economy of up to 23mpg is just so-so.

  • Good looks inside and out
  • fun to drive
  • Reliable in the long term with proper maintenance

(Video) Sedans That Can Last Over 200,000 Miles OR Even More

  • smaller back seat
  • Maintenance over time can become expensive
  • Hard to find with low mileage

10. 1996-2011 Mercury Grand Marquis

Why we chose it:Mechanically related to the Lincoln Town Car, the Grand Marquis is just as durable, just as big, and just a little less luxurious. In modern times, "grandma" was popular with pensioners and was therefore in good hands with many. The Mercury scores high for comfort, reliability and low maintenance costs, but fuel economy is poor. The Grand Marquis handles better than you might expect, but the rear-wheel-drive V8 setup isn't ideal for snowy weather.

  • Very comfortable and quiet.
  • reliable and resilient
  • V8-Power

  • bad fuel consumption
  • impractical size
  • Oldtimer-Feeling

11. 2006–2011 Hyundai Azera

Why we chose it:Hyundai's answer to the Toyota Avalon, the Azera, is similar in many ways. It's a roomy but conservative sedan with lots of features, including standard navigation on higher trims. The Azera has two available V6s with up to 263 horsepower, but like the Avalon, it's more about smoothness than fun. While lagging behind the Toyota overall, the Azera has high reliability ratings and is generally considered by owners to be a very good long-term value.

  • refined and spacious
  • Lots of standard features
  • Low running costs

  • smooth design
  • Quiet ride, but imprecise handling
  • Mediocre fuel consumption

12 Toyota Corolla 2003-2007

Why we chose it:Corollas have been the standard choice of cheap bikes for decades and have an enviable reputation for reliability and simplicity, but over the years and price range in our example, the ninth-generation model, built from mid-2002 to late 2007, takes the highest spot. These Corollas are cheap to buy and run when not interesting to drive or look at. The base engine in those years was a 130-horsepower four-cylinder, but a rare 170-horsepower XRS version was offered in 2005 and 2006, making it more fun to drive.

  • trustworthy
  • Easy to drive and live with
  • Low maintenance and acquisition costs.

  • Because of their reputation for reliability, some cars have been neglected.
  • More device than car
  • More interesting XRS is hard to find

13. 2003-2008 Pontiac tuning

Why we chose it:Pontiac may not have survived the Great Recession, but first-gen Vibe owners love their cars. The first generation Vibe consistently gets higher marks for reliability and value than its sibling, the Toyota Matrix, and the newer 2009-2010 Vibe. The vibe isn't as sporty as it sounds, but it offers two four-cylinder engines with up to 180 hp and available all-wheel drive. The hatchback's body is comfortable, offers good cargo space and the Vibe gets 25 to 29 mpg combined. The related Toyota Matrix from those years is also a good choice, but not rated as highly.

  • Inexpensive to purchase and operate
  • Good looking
  • practical hatchback body

  • hard seats
  • It's not as sporty as it looks.
  • Poor performance with the base engine

14,2007-2011 Toyota Yaris

The Best Used Cars Under $5,000 for 2021 (13)
(Video) 🔥Best Cars Under 10K - Top 10 Affordable Used Cars🔥

Why we chose it:The Yaris replaced the awkward-looking Toyota Echo in 2007, bringing with it a cuter design and slightly better fuel economy. The reliability of the small Toyota is first class and the running costs are low. Available as a hatchback or sedan, the Yaris looks good but doesn't make as good use of its interior space as the Honda Fit. It feels small and not fun to drive. A nicer Yaris debuted in 2012, but these cars are hard to find for less than $5,000.

  • Very cheap
  • good fuel economy
  • Low maintenance costs

  • Small size means space is limited
  • not very fun to drive
  • Early models lacked the standard anti-lock braking system

15 Honda Civic 2006-2011

Why we chose it:The futuristic-looking eighth-generation Civic was available in two body styles, a sleek coupe and a wedge-shaped sedan. It also came with multiple powertrain options. The most interesting are the sporty 197hp Si and the 42mpg hybrid, but the regular Civics were worth their time too. All Civics of this generation are reliable and inexpensive to maintain, although the hybrid's battery pack has long been out of warranty and can be very expensive to replace.

  • Good looks inside and out
  • reliable and efficient
  • Sport and hybrid models available

  • Small rear seat, especially on coupes
  • seltsames Dashboard-Layout
  • The longevity of hybrids is unknown

16Volkswagen Golf 2010-2011

Why we chose it:The sixth generation Golf brought a new level of sophistication and driving pleasure to the well-known hatchback and impressed with its petrol-powered 2.5-litre five-cylinder diesel engines and the economical 2.0-litre diesel four-cylinder engines. The latter later became the focus of the diesel emissions scandal, but Volkswagen eventually implemented an emissions fix for them with only a small loss in performance. These Golfs are still attractive, efficient, and reliable, but 2012 and newer models generally can't be found for less than $5,000.

  • practical and efficient
  • Attractive and fun to drive.
  • Nice if spartan interior.

  • Dieselgate-Stigma
  • Hard to find
  • Base models lack features

17th scion 2008-2012 xD

Why we chose it:As the successor to the previous Scion xA, the more upright looking xD continued the same formula. This model gets slightly lower reliability ratings than the xA, but it also has a more conventional and logical dashboard layout that some drivers will prefer. Based on the Yaris and powered by a 128hp four-cylinder engine, performance isn't very appealing, but the xD has a nicer interior and generally higher specification for a price similar to today.

  • The high-cross style still looks contemporary
  • Nice interior and features.
  • High quality, low cost

  • mediocre performance
  • The fuel consumption is only mediocre for a small car
  • Small cargo area with raised rear seats

18 2010–2012 Mazda3

The Best Used Cars Under $5,000 for 2021 (17)

Mazda 3 used offers

(Video) THE BEST Cars Under $5,000 For Reliability - Top 5 Reliable Cars Under $5k

Why we chose it:The new Mazda3 for 2010 improved reliability and rust resistance over the outgoing model, and also added a bit of space. Even if the style with the big, smiling forehead is not to everyone's taste, the overall package is right. Powered by either 144 or 165 hp four-cylinder engines, the second generation 3 Series is a car that's fun but still has decent gas mileage. The top-of-the-line models and the popular MazdaSpeed3 fall outside of this price bracket, but the lower-end pre-2013 models are a decent buy.

  • Sporty handling that implies driving experience.
  • Practical hatchback available
  • Very well designed interior.

  • The finest cost upwards of $5,000
  • Fewer features on base models
  • smiling forehead

19 2011–2012 Mazda2

Why we chose it:The small Mazda2 was the automaker's answer to the Honda Fit andNissanVersa, and philosophically closer to the former, a fun yet minimalist little car. Power comes from a 100hp 1.5 liter engine, but that's more than enough to have some featherweight fun.MazdaAnd still get up to 31 mpg combined. Compared to the Ford Fiesta, the 2 performs much better than this car in reliability and owner satisfaction. The 2's weakness is cargo space, of which it has very little.

  • cute and funny
  • Low owning and operating costs
  • comfortably indoors

  • 2013-2014 2 costs over $5,000
  • lack of cargo space
  • Few technical features

20. 2004–2008 Chrysler Crossfire Cupe

Why we chose it:This unusual looksports carIt's definitely not like the other cars on this list, but available data suggests owners like it to be a reliable car, and surprisingly, you can pick up a decent one for $5,000. A product of the former DaimlerChrysler union, the Crossfire borrowed its V6 engine and platform from the 1990s.Mercedes-Benz SLK and was built in Germany. It's an excellent performer, although its looks are an acquired taste and maintenance costs can be high.

  • Excellent performance
  • distinctive style
  • Looks and feels like an expensive car

  • As a two-seater, it lacks a lot of cargo space
  • distinctive style
  • Potentially high maintenance costs and expensive tires

To determine our list of the best vehicles under $5,000, we compare a wide range of reliability and quality scores, vehicle tester ratings, thousands of long-term reviews and owner ratings, and consider our own long-term experiences with these vehicles such as new & vintageused cars.

In addition to these criteria, the vehicle had to have an average transaction price of less than or close to $5,000, be manufactured after 1996, and be generally available in five major geographic markets. We researched hundreds of used car listings from Atlanta, Boston, Cleveland, Phoenix and Seattle.

Older models with fewer data points had to be further evaluated or were generally neglected due to a lack of available data. For example, the 2005-2007 Saab 9-2x may be a great used car, but there isn't enough data to adequately measure its reliability as it sells poorly new and is too hard to find for most buyers.

Some of the vehicles on our list are from brands that no longer exist. In all cases, the vehicle manufacturers still exist and there is generally adequate parts and service support. Discontinued brands often lose value, which can make them a good buy later on, but it can also depend on the model and manufacturer. A brother to the badge-engineered Toyota Matrix, the Pontiac Vibe enjoys good service support. The Saturn Astra, another GM car from the same era based on a European Opel design, doesn't.

We particularly focus on providing maximum value and reliability for the price, prioritizing models known for their durability and low running costs, but we also strive to offer a variety of models to suit different tastes. We also skipped some models due to higher than average withdrawal incidents.

While we can generally provide guidance on which models are the cheapest or most reliable, we cannot guarantee individual car performance. We've done the research, but we still encourage you to further research your options before purchasing, and as mentioned above, pre-purchase inspections are highly recommended.

Q: Is it worth buying a 10 year old car?

That can be, yes. Vehicles over 10 years old are at or near the end of their depreciation curve, the time when a car is too old to be considered new but too young to be a "classic". Some of the best values can be found in this area, but you must be willing to look around, inspect carefully, and live without a few modern features. These cars can also be easily transported for a long time as long as they have been serviced and buyers continue to invest in maintenance. That may cost some money over time, but $5,000 is still less than a third of the cost of purchasecheapest new car 2021and even most of the latest generation certified used cars.

P: Does mileage matter for used cars? What is more important, age or mileage?

Both mileage and age are important, but how a vehicle has been maintained is more important.

The older a vehicle is, the more its components can age and the harder it can be to get replacement parts, although big brand cars shouldn't have too much of a problem. The higher the mileage of a vehicle, the greater the mechanical wear, which can mean earlier replacement of parts or a number of costs due to component wear.

In the 1990s it was widely believed that most cars wore out after 100,000 miles or 10 years, but improved quality standards have increased vehicle longevity. The average car in the United States is now nearly 12 years old, and a quarter of cars are over 16 years old. It's common to seequality used carsOver 100,000 miles now but usually under 150,000. One vehicle on our list, the 2003-2008 Pontiac Vibe, has a faulty odometer that stops recording miles at 299,999. But this bug is well known because owners drove 300,000 miles to see it.

Proper maintenance and careful use are more important than mileage or age. The average vehicle is driven 12,000 miles per year over its lifetime, but many vehicles are seeing much less demand than that. A low-mileage car that has not been properly maintained or has been idling for a long time could cause more problems than a vehicle with high mileage that has been carefully maintained. If possible, ask previous owners for service records and request a pre-sale mechanical inspection.

Q: Should I have a mechanic inspect a used vehicle?

Yes, ideally you already have a relationship with a mechanic you know, but if not there are many services that will perform pre-sales inspections. Ideally, this inspection should include a road test on various types of roads with potholes or broken pavement and driving at highway speeds to test the vehicle in all conditions. Adding a mechanical inspection can be socially awkward if the seller hesitates, and will likely cost you $150-$200, but it's money well spent. Keep in mind that even the best mechanics may not be able to find every possible problem, but they can help you spot obvious signs of neglect.

Q: Where is the best place to buy a used car for under $5,000?

The best option is buying from a private party, and such offers are most commonly found on places like Craigslist, OfferUp, or Facebook Marketplace. Individuals don't have to worry about real estate costs on a car lot or paying retailers to make their inventory shine, so these costs don't factor into the selling price. They also tend to have maintenance records and at least some history of the vehicle, which most used car dealers don't have. Many used cars are bought at wholesale auctions and little information is provided. You can also find good deals at state or impounded auctions, but these sources are just as opaque when it comes to the underlying condition of the vehicle and you can't inspect the lot before you buy it.
